I started The Finer Edit because I got tired of choosing between two kinds of writing about good places: the kind that tells you everything is wonderful, and the kind that tells you nothing at all.

What I wanted instead was somewhere that reads like a friend with excellent taste and a notebook in her pocket. Somewhere that will tell you honestly when a town isn’t much to look at, and then tell you exactly why it’s worth the drive anyway. Somewhere that cares as much about whether the parking is easy as whether the light through the window is lovely, because both of those things are true at once, most of the time, and pretending otherwise has never struck me as very useful.

So here is what you’ll find. Places to eat that earned their mention rather than paid for it, and when they didn’t earn it, we’ll say so plainly. Recipes I’ve actually cooked, more than once, in my own kitchen, with the failures quietly edited out and the genuinely useful bits left in. Guides to towns and counties and coastlines that we’ve researched carefully enough to get the history right, and visited properly enough to tell you what it actually feels like to be there on a Tuesday afternoon rather than in the brochure.

We are not a directory. We are not trying to convince you that everything is a hidden gem. We are trying to help you choose well, which is a smaller promise than it sounds and a harder one to keep.
